Our Vocal Arts program provides singers a warm community of peers who together develop performance skills, musicianship, and confidence through collaborative music-making. CHS Vocal Arts offers students a place of connection through a variety of activities both during and after school. CHS singers develop confidence in using their voice for self-expression and experience meaningful rewards as musical community members.

About the Director:

Maddy Parkes is Director of Vocal Arts at Cheltenham High School. In her teaching, she hopes to foster students’ musicianship skills, musical independence, creativity, connection to others, and expressiveness. Under her direction, the CHS Vocal Arts program has emerged from the pandemic and is thriving with several co-curricular and extracurricular opportunities, including four choirs, two a capella groups, the touring ensemble, and an annual musical. Additionally, singers in the CHS Vocal Arts program have placed in ACDA National Honor Choirs and PMEA District, Regional, and All-State Choirs, and are also involved in other choral opportunities outside of Cheltenham School District, including Pennsylvania Girl Choir and Keystone State Boychoir. She began teaching in the Cheltenham School District at Cedarbrook Middle School, then moved to Cheltenham High School in 2022. Ms. Parkes holds bachelor’s degrees in Piano Performance and Music Education from Ithaca College and is currently pursuing an MM in Choral Conducting from Michigan State University. Her areas of study include the female changing voice, music reading pedagogy, and secondary methods using Kodály philosophy. In addition to her studies, she is also Level 1 and 2 Kodály Certified.
